About
Dr. Lawrence Sanders is a board-certified psychiatrist with 22 years of experience in adult and geriatric psychiatry. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and completed psychiatry residency at Georgetown University Hospital, followed by a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. His dual training in adult and geriatric psychiatry gives him broad expertise across the lifespan, from the assessment and management of major mental illness in working-age adults to the complex psychiatric presentations of ageing.
Dr. Sanders's clinical practice encompasses the evaluation and management of major depressive disorder, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He has particular expertise in treatment-resistant depression, supervising ketamine and electroconvulsive therapy programmes for patients with severe, recurrent depressive illness that has not responded to multiple adequate pharmacological trials.
His geriatric psychiatry practice focuses on dementia evaluation and management — including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia — late-life depression, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and the psychiatric aspects of neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease. He conducts comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments and works closely with neurology, geriatric medicine, and social work to deliver coordinated care for elderly patients with complex psychiatric and cognitive needs.
Dr. Sanders has published on the management of treatment-resistant depression and on behavioural interventions for agitation in dementia, appearing in the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. He serves on the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry's education committee and has received the Georgetown University Distinguished Alumnus Award for his contributions to psychiatric education. He is a compassionate clinician who believes that mental illness deserves the same rigour of diagnosis and treatment as any other medical condition.
