About

Dr. Michael Chen is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and one of the most experienced cardiothoracic surgeons in the United States, with 25 years of practice following his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and surgical residency and fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Toronto General Hospital. He has performed over 3,000 cardiac operations and is internationally recognised for his expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

Dr. Chen's operative repertoire spans coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) using arterial conduits with a focus on achieving complete revascularisation, complex valve repair and replacement for mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valve disease, and aortic root and ascending aorta reconstruction for aneurysmal and dissection pathology. He has pioneered a minimally invasive approach to mitral valve repair through a right mini-thoracotomy, avoiding full sternotomy and enabling faster recovery.

He has a particular interest in cardiac surgery for patients with prior sternotomy — redo operations — and those with severely impaired ventricular function. His programme in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation as a bridge to transplantation or destination therapy supports patients with refractory end-stage heart failure who are not candidates for heart transplantation or who are awaiting a suitable donor organ.

Dr. Chen has published extensively in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, with research focused on outcomes in redo cardiac surgery and optimal anticoagulation strategies following LVAD implantation. Committed to training the next generation of cardiac surgeons, he directs a cardiothoracic surgery simulation programme and serves on the editorial board of two peer-reviewed journals.
