About Silvaris University Medical Center — Detroit, MI
SilverOak University Medical Center Detroit is a 540-bed academic referral hospital and an anchor institution of Michigan's healthcare landscape, drawing complex surgical cases and undifferentiated diagnostic challenges from communities across the entire Great Lakes region. As a designated training site affiliated with Michigan's leading medical university, SilverOak Detroit combines the intellectual energy of academic medicine with a deep commitment to the health of Detroit's storied and resilient communities.
Complex surgery is the defining clinical signature of SilverOak Detroit. Our cardiothoracic surgery program holds a Society of Thoracic Surgeons three-star rating for both isolated coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic valve replacement — the STS's highest designation, placing us in the top 10% of US cardiac surgery programs. Our vascular surgery team manages thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, complex redo arterial reconstructions, and endovascular aortic repair with outcomes that consistently exceed national benchmarks.
SilverOak Detroit is home to one of the Midwest's most active solid organ transplant programs, performing kidney, liver, heart, and lung transplantation with graft survival rates that rank in the top quartile nationally. Our transplant hepatology service, working in close collaboration with interventional radiology and surgical oncology, provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary pathway for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma requiring bridging therapy, downstaging, or liver transplantation.
NIH-funded research at SilverOak University Detroit encompasses cardiovascular surgery outcomes, vascular biology, transplant immunology, and cancer genomics. Our faculty regularly collaborate with colleagues at peer institutions across the country, and our research findings are a consistent presence in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and the Annals of Surgery. Patients treated at our center contribute to a body of knowledge that ultimately benefits patients everywhere.
