About

Dr. Mark Collins is a board-certified nephrologist and urological nephrologist with 14 years of practice following medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and nephrology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he developed a subspecialty interest in nephrolithiasis, obstructive uropathy, and the intersection of renal and urological disease. He subsequently pursued additional training in renal ultrasonography, becoming one of few nephrologists with formal competency in point-of-care renal imaging.

Dr. Collins manages the full range of medical nephrology presentations, including acute kidney injury in hospitalised patients, chronic kidney disease management, hypertension refractory to standard therapy, and electrolyte disorders. His subspecialty focus on nephrolithiasis encompasses metabolic evaluation of stone-forming patients, dietary and pharmacological prevention strategies, and close collaboration with urological surgery for stone removal procedures. He runs a dedicated stone clinic that has substantially reduced stone recurrence rates through structured metabolic follow-up.

He has a particular interest in urological nephrology — the interface between nephrology and urology — including the management of obstructive nephropathy, vesicoureteric reflux nephropathy, renal vein thrombosis, and the renal consequences of urological malignancy and its treatment. He participates in a joint nephrology-urology clinic that provides coordinated care for patients with overlapping renal and urological diagnoses.

Dr. Collins has published on the metabolic determinants of calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis and on dietary interventions to reduce stone recurrence. He is an enthusiastic teacher and serves as clerkship director for third-year medical students rotating through the nephrology service, having received the University of Iowa's Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award. Patients appreciate his thorough explanations of complex kidney conditions and his practical, actionable dietary advice.
