Paediatric Oncology & BMT Centre

The Paediatric Oncology & BMT Centre at SilverOak Health provides comprehensive, family-centred cancer care for children and adolescents, managing leukaemias, lymphomas, brain tumours, solid tumours, and histiocytic disorders within a multidisciplinary programme that encompasses medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. Our paediatric oncologists, specialist nurses, psychologists, play therapists, and teachers deliver care that addresses the physical, emotional, educational, and developmental needs of every child and their family.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia — the most common childhood cancer — is treated with risk-stratified Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM)-based protocols achieving cure rates exceeding 85% in standard-risk disease. Acute myeloid leukaemia, chronic myeloid leukaemia, and myelodysplastic syndrome are managed with age-appropriate intensive regimens and allogeneic BMT for high-risk cases. Comprehensive molecular diagnostics including cytogenetics, FISH, and next-generation sequencing characterise each leukaemia's risk profile and identify actionable targets.

Paediatric solid tumours managed at our centre include Wilms tumour, neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, osteosarcoma, hepatoblastoma, and retinoblastoma. Multidisciplinary management integrating neoadjuvant chemotherapy, organ-preserving surgery, and radiation therapy — planned in dedicated paediatric tumour boards — consistently achieves outcomes aligned with Children's Oncology Group benchmarks. Limb-salvage surgery for bone tumours uses expandable endoprostheses in growing children, preserving function throughout skeletal maturation.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation — autologous for selected solid tumours and allogeneic for haematological malignancies and non-malignant conditions including aplastic anaemia, immune deficiencies, and metabolic storage disorders — is performed within our dedicated paediatric transplant unit. Matched sibling, matched unrelated donor, haploidentical, and umbilical cord blood transplants are all offered, with GVHD prevention strategies and infection surveillance protocols adapted to each donor source and patient age.

Late effects monitoring — addressing cardiac, endocrine, neurocognitive, reproductive, and growth-related consequences of cancer treatment — is provided through our structured survivorship programme, recognising that the consequences of treatment may not manifest until years after therapy completion. Psychosocial support for children, siblings, and parents throughout the cancer journey — including play therapy, art therapy, school liaison, and bereavement support — is integral to our approach. Our return-to-school programme ensures educational continuity during and after treatment.
