Dr. Robert Williams

Dr. Robert Williams is a nationally recognised heart failure specialist and transplant cardiologist with 20 years of experience in advanced cardiac therapies. A graduate of Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, he completed internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship, and a dedicated advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowship, all within the Mayo Clinic system, giving him unparalleled exposure to one of the world's highest-volume transplant programmes.

Dr. Williams evaluates and manages patients with New York Heart Association Class III and IV heart failure, including those with dilated cardiomyopathy, ischaemic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, and complex congenital heart disease in adults. He oversees a multidisciplinary heart failure programme encompassing guideline-directed medical therapy optimisation, remote haemodynamic monitoring using implantable pulmonary artery pressure sensors (CardioMEMS), and patient education programmes focused on sodium restriction, fluid management, and early recognition of decompensation.

His expertise in mechanical circulatory support includes pre-operative LVAD evaluation, HeartMate 3 and HeartWare LVAD implantation decision-making, and post-implant management including anticoagulation, driveline wound care, and device exchange. He has served as principal investigator on a multicentre registry examining quality of life and functional outcomes in destination therapy LVAD recipients over 5-year follow-up.

Dr. Williams has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to national heart failure guidelines through his work with the Heart Failure Society of America. He considers honest, compassionate communication about prognosis and the limitations of advanced therapies to be among the most important skills a heart failure cardiologist can offer, and he devotes considerable time to goals-of-care conversations with patients and their families.
