About

Dr. Sarah Thompson is a dual-qualified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist with an MD and PhD from Stanford University, where her doctoral research examined the molecular mechanisms of atrial fibrillation initiation. She completed cardiology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and an electrophysiology fellowship at University of Pennsylvania, gaining subspecialty expertise in catheter ablation and implantable cardiac devices.

Her clinical practice is devoted to the management of complex cardiac arrhythmias, with particular expertise in atrial fibrillation ablation using cryoballoon and radiofrequency energy, including posterior wall isolation and electrogram-guided substrate modification in persistent AF. She performs implantation of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices, including leadless pacemakers and subcutaneous ICDs.

Dr. Thompson has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters on electrophysiology, with research interests in AF recurrence prediction using machine learning applied to intracardiac electrogram features, and the role of sex differences in arrhythmia presentation and ablation outcomes. She is a founding member of a national AF ablation outcomes registry capturing real-world procedural data from 30 centres.

Passionate about preventive cardiology, Dr. Thompson counsels her patients on lifestyle modification as a cornerstone of arrhythmia management, integrating weight management, sleep apnoea treatment, and alcohol reduction alongside pharmacological and procedural therapies. She has been awarded Stanford's Excellence in Teaching Award for her contributions to cardiology fellow education and simulation-based EP training.
