Upper & Lower GI Endoscopy

Gastrointestinal endoscopy at SilverOak Health provides direct visualisation of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, combining clinical accuracy with patient comfort and safety. Our endoscopy unit operates Monday through Saturday with a dedicated team of gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, endoscopy nurses, and recovery staff.

Upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy / OGD) is used to investigate symptoms including dysphagia, heartburn, upper abdominal pain, unexplained anaemia, and haematemesis. The oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum are systematically examined using high-definition white-light endoscopy supplemented by narrow-band imaging and chromoendoscopy to characterise mucosal abnormalities. Biopsy, brush cytology, and CLO testing for Helicobacter pylori are performed at the same sitting.

Colonoscopy is the gold standard investigation for lower GI symptoms including rectal bleeding, altered bowel habit, unexplained iron deficiency, and surveillance after colorectal cancer or adenoma resection. Our endoscopists achieve consistently high adenoma detection rates — a quality indicator directly linked to colorectal cancer prevention — using high-definition colonoscopes and systematic mucosal inspection techniques.

Therapeutic endoscopy covers a broad range of interventions including polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection and submucosal dissection for early GI cancers, oesophageal and colonic stent insertion, haemostasis of acute GI bleeding using injection, thermal, and mechanical techniques, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) insertion, and ERCP with sphincterotomy, stone extraction, and biliary stenting for pancreato-biliary disease.

Capsule endoscopy is available for investigation of the small bowel — beyond the reach of conventional endoscopes — in patients with obscure GI bleeding, suspected Crohn's disease, and small bowel tumours. Device-assisted enteroscopy allows deep small bowel intubation for biopsy and therapeutic intervention when capsule endoscopy identifies pathology requiring tissue diagnosis or treatment.
