Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery — total hip arthroplasty (THA) — is one of the most successful and cost-effective surgical procedures in medicine, delivering reliable pain relief and restoration of mobility to patients with end-stage hip arthritis, avascular necrosis, or hip fracture sequelae. At SilverOak Health, hip replacement is performed using direct anterior, posterior, and lateral surgical approaches selected based on the patient's anatomy and the surgeon's expertise, with implant choices tailored to individual factors including age, activity level, and bone quality.

The procedure involves removing the damaged femoral head and acetabular cartilage and replacing them with metal, ceramic, and polyethylene implant components that recreate the smooth, pain-free articulation of a healthy hip joint. Cementless press-fit fixation is standard for most patients under 75, allowing biological bone ingrowth into the porous implant surface for durable long-term fixation. Cemented fixation is preferred in elderly patients with poor bone quality to ensure immediate implant stability.

Computer-assisted planning using pre-operative CT or X-ray templating enables precise pre-operative planning of implant size and leg length, minimising the risk of limb length discrepancy — a leading cause of patient dissatisfaction after hip replacement. Post-operative care follows an ERAS protocol with same-day mobilisation, multimodal analgesia, and physiotherapy-guided gait rehabilitation. Most patients are discharged within two to three days and return to light activities within six weeks. Implant survivorship at 15 years exceeds 90% in our programme, consistent with international registry data.
