Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus, performed through small abdominal incisions using a camera and specialised instruments rather than a large open abdominal cut. It is the preferred surgical approach for benign indications including symptomatic uterine fibroids, heavy menstrual bleeding refractory to medical management, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and uterine prolapse when fertility preservation is not required.
At SilverOak Health, total laparoscopic hysterectomy involves complete laparoscopic division of all uterine supports and blood supply, with the uterus removed vaginally. The procedure can be performed with or without removal of the cervix (total versus subtotal hysterectomy) and with or without removal of the ovaries (salpingo-oophorectomy), depending on the indication and the patient's age, menopausal status, and personal preferences regarding future hormonal management.
Compared to open abdominal hysterectomy, the laparoscopic approach offers significantly shorter hospital stay (typically one to two nights), less post-operative pain, lower risk of wound complications, faster return to normal activities (two to three weeks compared to six to eight weeks for open surgery), and equivalent or superior oncological outcomes when performed for early-stage gynaecological malignancies.
