Diabetes & Endocrinology Centre
The Diabetes & Endocrinology Centre at SilverOak Health provides expert assessment and management of the full spectrum of hormonal disorders and metabolic diseases, combining evidence-based clinical practice with an active research programme that ensures our patients have access to the most current therapeutic options. Our consultant endocrinologists and specialist diabetes nurses deliver care that is patient-centred, holistic, and focused on empowering individuals to optimise their own health.
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus management at our centre encompasses structured patient education programmes — DESMOND for type 2 and DAFNE for type 1 — continuous glucose monitoring interpretation clinics using flash and real-time CGM systems, insulin pump therapy initiation and optimisation for type 1 and selected insulin-requiring type 2 patients, and management of complex diabetes complications in dedicated multidisciplinary clinics. Our diabetic foot clinic brings together endocrinologists, vascular surgeons, podiatrists, orthopaedic surgeons, and wound care nurses to manage the most common cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation.
Thyroid disease is among our most common referral diagnoses. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism management, thyroid nodule evaluation with ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration cytology, radioiodine therapy for Graves' disease and toxic nodular goitre, and thyroid cancer management in collaboration with our oncology team are all provided within our integrated thyroid service. Adrenal diseases managed include Cushing's syndrome from all causes, primary hyperaldosteronism, phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma, adrenal incidentaloma, and primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency.
Pituitary diseases — acromegaly, prolactinoma, Cushing's disease, non-functioning pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngioma, and hypopituitarism — are managed within our dedicated pituitary MDT meeting monthly with neurosurgery and radiation oncology. Dynamic endocrine function testing — synacthen, insulin stress, oral glucose tolerance, water deprivation, and glucagon stimulation tests — is performed in our dedicated endocrine investigation unit with experienced nursing supervision. Metabolic bone disease including osteoporosis, hypercalcaemia, hypoparathyroidism, and Paget's disease of bone is managed with modern antiresorptive and osteoanabolic therapies.
Obesity medicine — encompassing structured lifestyle intervention, pharmacological treatment with GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GLP-1/GIP agonists, and pre- and post-bariatric surgery metabolic optimisation — is a growing component of our service given the central role of obesity in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver disease. Neuroendocrine tumours, disorders of puberty, polycystic ovary syndrome, and male hypogonadism complete the breadth of conditions managed within our endocrinology programme. Close collaboration with dietetics, psychology, and physiotherapy ensures truly holistic metabolic care.
